The 2014 MTV Music awards were filled with big stars, explosive movies, some interesting stunts and a fair share of technical problems, but in the end it served as a fun, laid-back celebration of cinema and popular culture the way that MTV was always meant to exemplify.
The night began with an energetic and strangely commanding opening by the shows (rarely-seen) host Conan O'Brien. Starting was an pre-taped intro where Conan managed to get a whopping 50 celebrity cameos (including Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, the cast of The Big Bang Theory, and himself) and stuff them into a segment less than a few minutes long. Then Conan then came out to a blaze of pyrotechnic glory and the show started off strong.
Despite a few hiccups, like people not being able to read the teleprompter or stars coming on stage without
microphone, and a few segments that didn't really work or just weren't as funny as they could have been, the night moved at a brisk clip and made sure to keep the mood light.
Zac Efron managed to get his shirt ripped off by Rita Ora after winning the Best Shirtless Scene award for acting topless in his film That Awkward Moment. Some of the cast of Entourage presented the Generation Award to Mark Wahlberg. There were numerous exclusive first looks at upcoming blockbusters (including The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days Of Future Past) and wonderful musical performances by Rihanna, Eminem, and Ellie Goulding, to name a few.
There were also some touching tributes to stars we've lost this year, including a moving segment dedicated to Paul Walker, and Josh Hutcherson thanking Philip Seymour Hoffman after The Hunger Games: Catching Fire won Movie Of The Year.
